Dear prospective student in Erasmus Mundus QEM, be aware of some things before you make a choice "to change your life". I have made that choice to study QEM and I want to share my experience with you. Since you cannot really get any insight on this program just by reading the web-site - believe me it is a job well done, and what you will read will seem amazing - this program is actually far from amazing for students who really want to pursue a professional career:
1) The first semester I spent in Paris, and it was all about mechanical repetition of very old notes by very old professors, who actually could not speak English well. The whole teaching experience was missing: no dialogue students - professors since unknowingly why French professors do not care what you want, for them is important to finish the lecture and to go to the office. There was one professor who had saliva coming down his mouth, and he treated students outrageously bad i.e. The professor: "Switch off your computer (in class), and leave the room!", The student: "I am taking notes", The professor: "I don't care, take notes by pen!". Furthermore, the administration is terribly bad to students, and they do not answer to emails even if you say in the title something like "I do not have where to live".
2) The second semester in Barcelona was the worst time of my life. The program that calls itself IDEA, they think they are the best, so we as students there had to "live up to their expectations". In the beginning lecture the coordinator came up to greet us. We were all smiling and being kind, and she simply added: "Don't think you are here on holiday!". What a warm welcome! Basically, since it is difficult to describe I will present you facts: studying everyday all day, writing 3 problem sets each week accounting for the lousy 15-25% of the final grade in the subject. The professors did not care about students at all, since they think they are the best in the world, which reflected on us, the students, being totally stressed out all the time. Some people got psychological problems, others got two failing grades, and the final result was the same: THEY (about the half !!!) ALL HAD TO LEAVE ! Dreams shattered indeed! Then by the end we organised each other and made an official protest, by dedicating time explaining how the program could be improved, all the people had their hopes on that, what we received was: "YOU ONLY LIKE TO PARTY AND NOT TO STUDY. WE PAY YOU SO YOU HAVE TO WORK" namely in the language of the QEM coordinators: We pay you scholarships every month and your ass is ours. CONGRATULATIONS !
3) Later on, in my third semester in Venice, I can "gladly" say I met the most hypocritical of QEM all. First off, you get something they call "mandatory subjects" which basically means: "WE DON'T CARE WHAT YOUR INTERESTS ARE, WHAT WE DO CARE ABOUT IS THAT THE CLASS OF THE PHD STUDENTS IS FULL, AND THE PROFESSORS HAS MORE MEAT STOCK IN THERE". Yes, we studied with PhD students. In the beginning things looked different though. We were asked: "What do you want to specialize in?" And I chose finance. Ok, well, by the end of the course I had my "mandatory subjects" in things anti-finance like Behavioral Economics and Empirical Economics. So, then what? Oh, yes, I chose one professor for advisor, then in the end he suddenly dropped me, and reassigned me to a person that actually did not read my work at all. Also, did I mention that professor stopped responding to my emails totally ignoring me. So, it is about time to mention about the attitude of the Italian professors, if you think French are bad, then DO NOT come to Italy. For example, the professor will never say NO, what he would do is to keep you on the hook, waiting... waiting... you ask again... he does not reply... waiting... and then suddenly the deadline is gone. Ops.
4) The program is not really coordinated well. The "coordinator" is in Paris, but I can tell you that the guys in Barcelona and Venice are their own coordinators, they do not care what the Parisian would say, because they have the attitude: "We are the best, they cannot tell us what to do". This of course reflects on the students.
5) The psychology of the QEM students once in that environment changes. The process is straightforward - the months starts in anticipation of the new check in the bank account, and continues like this. It is the money that make up for the previous 4 points. BUT if so, then think about it whether it is worth it:
- you end QEM without any specialization, so actually you study your ass off 2 years, but since the program is not well organized the result of your studies is a broad superficial coverage on topics from behavioral economics to time series etc.
- you graduate and if you are in Venice, nobody can help you find a job - no career service for foregners, since you do not know Italian, the mandatory Italian course you take is actually both a money mint for the teacher and another bureaucratic formality for the coordinators here.
- the consortium jiggles you from country to country simply because the money of the EU is on your tail, and each university wants a share of the big pie. The result, as you might now, psychological ... because of all the changes, the new languages, the new cultures, the new coordinators you have to deal with (very difficult) etc.
- the worst thing is that the QEM coordinators are willing to do anything just to keep the status quo, and therefore the EU money mint flowing meaning they distort the reality behind QEM, and are very skilled in manipulating the current students. For example, when there is a decisive meeting in Brussels on the program budget every year, there are QEM students representatives, but carefully selected and manipulated so no objections are raised in front of the guys in the EU - the money mint launcher.
In conclusion, QEM Erasmus Mundus was the worst choice of MSc program in my life, and right now I am in a delicate position finding a job, and in general meaning behing all 2 years of hard studying. If you respect yourself, and you do not look only after the generous money package on your tail (remember, this program is all about it, your money tail, NOT you), then think twice before applying to this program.
they give u GPA 4 and invite to PhD with their University, but when u apply - they accept u without scholarship - what a mockery
ReplyDeleteThe arguments are not very well presented and seems to stem from bitterness.
ReplyDeleteHowever, as a former IDEA student myself, I would say that the Barcelona part of the program has serious structural issues (that I find it hard to believe will change any time soon) and in accordance with the author I think that this to a large extent can be attributed to a condescending attitude among the program leadership.
I wouldn't recommend the program to anyone but those who desperately seek a way to spend some time in Barcelona - and even then there are a trillion other things you would want to do before attending this master.

ReplyDeleteI got accepted in this course and after reading this post, am in serious doubt.
Hey! Did you go? I just applied for QEM. I was super excited, but after reading this post not so sure. Any insights?

DeleteHi please, I find it difficult to create an email even with my current email to the QEM. Can you please help me do that?
DeleteMe too alma...I heard that this program is for who want continue with PhD I don't I want find a job after...so what do you think about
ReplyDeleteHi Francesco,
DeleteI was also accepted to the QEM Masters, and before applying to it I reviewed its job placement record since 2008. It was good to see that even though a some people were still looking for a job, most people were already working or continued with a Ph.D. According to the records, not everyone chose to pursuit a Ph.D after graduation, there were a lot of graduates working in the Financial Sector and in other type of jobs.
Hopefully we'll meet in September :),
Regards,
Juliana.
Hey juliana what do u think about your experience so far? Hope u c this
DeleteHey Juliana do you have email I have some questions for you.
DeleteHey I got accepted in the QEM program and do not want to pursue Phd after it. I have some questions. Can I get your email Juliana please?
DeleteDid you get the EM Scholarship?
DeleteHey Everyone!
ReplyDeleteI recently got admitted to the QEM programme without the EMS scholarship. I'm yet to apply for the consortium scholarship, which I'll eventually. But I need to know is the programme worth it without the scholarship?
I have heard the programme is good for those who want to pursue Ph.D, but I'm not too sure for myself on that. I'd be looking for a job, to pay off my loan if there's no scholarship. So. Please tell me? Is the programme recognisable and credible world wide?
Hi Rachita :),

I will try to share the link of such job placement records with you, since at the moment they seem to be updating the QEM webpage. You could also look for it on google and check it by yourself.

ReplyDeleteHello Oscar, I am curious if you have already received the EMS offer. What are your thoughts about the programme so far? Feel free to contact me directly, castorcomploj@gmail.com
DeleteHello everyone! I see no further answers about how the QEM master course is now... Any new experiences? I have applied a little while ago and I have been accepted; but I am not sure (after reading this blog) if I should go in there...
ReplyDeleteAnyone in 2020 with these same thoughts?
Hey, I plan to apply this year but after reading this I kinda have second thought. So, did you get in to the course? I would appreciate it if you're willing to share your experience. You can email me at fitri6019@gmail.com thanks
DeleteHello, I would also like to see if there is someone willing to pursue Master QEM this year, and knows somebody who has already studied there! I just got accepted, without Erasmus Mundus Scholarship but I could try to find some other ways of funding- if the program is worth it!
ReplyDeleteHey, If you enrolled in it please contact me at salonilpmp@gmail.com I am going through the same dilemma
DeleteHi all. I have been an applicant and would like to share with you an elaboration on QEM by recent students. Hopefully this comment will make it finally clear to you all what the program is about, how it is organized, and whether you think it is worth applying or not. A few points first: - the organization is 'not good' - the program is challenging (it is Econometrics) - don't take the job placement as a factor of deciding First off, even many years after its inception, the administration appears to be badly organized, and they seem to prefer ignoring an e-mail to which they don't know how to respond to. Many students in our cohort have not received replies, and it usually took 2-3 mails to get a response. The same goes for confirmation letters, documentation, and inaccurate information on their website. Application deadline was February 15th, yet it took them about 3 months to give a response to everyone, much longer than the 3 weeks indicated. As you can understand from this thread, most responses were given in April/May only. The program is challenging because it is econometrics that you will study. If you do not have the background of economics or mathematics, you do need to study ahead of time, otherwise you will naturally feel it to be terrible. Teaching is not excellent and professors difficult to approach, but the content you will cover is still qualitative. Luckily, there are many online resources to use nowadays.
ReplyDeleteHopefully this explains it all and if things change, future QEM students should add details to this thread as it is the only way for future students to understand.
A comment by a former student:
"Ok so the general points first.
- Yes the organisation is horrible and probably will not change. The best is to be as less reliable on them as possible (housing, finance, ect.). As the main organisation is in Paris you will probably always have to deal with them in some way but obviously once you changed university (i.e Poland, Spain) the local organisation might be better.
- The more math you do and know the better and the easier, especially the first semester will be. (Although there won’t be a lot of numbers but letters ;)). Since the students come from a wide range of backgrounds it can be pretty difficult and stressful for some. ( I think the average drop-out rate is around 10%). I would recommend going over Topology, Statistics (in the mathematical sense) and optimisation. (There are great edx and free online courses. I wish I would have done this, as this would have made my 1 semester much more enjoyable).
- Generally the program is designed to prepare you for a Phd, so much more theoretical and mathematical then other economic courses.
- Yes I think we all read the jobs position of past students. I would however take them with a grain of scepticism. Meaning that just because some people achieved that doesn’t mean the program automatically will open those doors for you but it might and generally the universities are well regarded.
More specific:
Pros:
- You might have some renowned professors.
- I have some friends who did the 2ed year in Paris and they liked it far more then the 1th semester, so apparently it can get better.
Con:
- The city: is extremely expensive min. 550 Euros for rent, busy, overpopulated, a lot of demonstrations
- the university system there (I think we had around 32 hours of courses, which left almost no time for studying and very little sleep) (I think this is common across French public universities, although not sure)
- Professors: Many are pedagogically unqualified professors (Not all though). With some horrible TA´s and terrible structure.
I did not regret doing the program, since I figured out I really enjoy the theoretical and mathematical side."
Guys, simply don't do this; the program is a complete mess, and you will be forced to study with 2nd year Master students and PhDs during your first year. If you already have very strong basis in Economics, this will work out, but in 9/10 cases this will just be an unnecessary effort, in so far you won't learn the basics! This, to me, is the biggest problem of the whole track. You want to take a Master in Economics? Then, go either at Autonoma or at Cà Foscari or in Poland or in Louvain La Neuve (Paris is crap). But don't do QEM!!!
ReplyDeleteI work with QEM students everyday (I am a PhD candidate in Louvain La Neuve) : great, brilliant people, that everytime need to understand on their own things that their crappy program didn't explain them!
Hey can you share your email address or contact me at salonilpmp@gmail.com I have many questions regarding this.
DeleteThanks
